Fra Lippo Lippi: Songs - A Classic Album of New Wave and Pop Rock
Fra Lippo Lippi is a Norwegian band that emerged in the early 1980s with a dark and gloomy sound influenced by post-punk and gothic rock. However, their third album, Songs, released in 1985, marked a significant change in their style and direction. Songs was a collection of melodic and catchy tunes that blended new wave, pop rock, synth-pop and jazz elements. The album was a critical and commercial success, especially in Asia, where it spawned several hit singles such as "Shouldn't Have to Be Like That", "Everytime I See You" and "The Distance Between Us".
Songs was produced by John Leckie, who had previously worked with bands like The Fall, Simple Minds and XTC. Leckie helped Fra Lippo Lippi polish their sound and bring out their pop sensibilities. The album featured guest musicians such as Martin Ditcham on percussion, Phil Todd on saxophone and Mark Feltham on harmonica. The result was a rich and diverse sonic palette that ranged from upbeat and danceable tracks like "Come Summer" and "Angel" to mellow and introspective ballads like "Beauty and Madness" and "Leaving". The album also showcased the distinctive vocals of Per Oystein Sorensen, who sang with a smooth and soulful tone that contrasted with the band's previous vocalist Bjorn Sorknes.
Songs was reissued in 1986 by Virgin Records with a different cover art and a remixed version of the tracklist. The remixed album included two new songs: "Freedom" and "Don't Take Away That Light", which became popular in the Philippines. The remixed album also omitted two songs from the original release: "Say Something" and "Regrets". Songs has been widely regarded as Fra Lippo Lippi's best and most influential album, as well as one of the finest examples of new wave and pop rock music from the 1980s.
Songs received positive reviews from critics and fans alike, who praised Fra Lippo Lippi's musical evolution and maturity. Michael Sutton of AllMusic gave the album a 4.5 out of 5 stars rating, calling it "engaging and moving from beginning to end". He also highlighted Sorensen's "empathic voice" and the "uplifting synthesized hooks" on the album. Thom Jurek of AllMusic also gave a favorable review to the remixed version of Songs, which he described as "a more celebratory -- though no less satisfying -- jazzy indie pop". He noted that the album "marked a significant change in their style and direction" and that it was "a critical and commercial success, especially in Asia".
Songs was followed by three more albums that continued Fra Lippo Lippi's pop journey: Light & Shade (1987), The Colour Album (1989) and Dreams (1992). Each of these albums featured different guest musicians and producers, such as Walter Becker of Steely Dan, Tommy LiPuma and Tore Johansen. Fra Lippo Lippi also experimented with different genres and influences, such as soul, funk, R&B and world music. Some of their most notable songs from this period include "Angel", "Freedom", "Don't Take Away That Light", "Beauty and Madness", "Light and Shade", "Some People", "Love Is a Lonely Harbour" and "Mother's Little Soldier". Fra Lippo Lippi disbanded in 1992, but reunited for a few concerts in the 2000s. Their legacy as one of the most original and influential bands of the 1980s remains intact. aa16f39245
